Comics Cosmos – Wynonna Earp

If you’re looking for a female protagonist who’s not a typical hero, enjoy the paranormal side of things and like a touch of Western then Wynonna Earp may be the show for you. A descendant of Wyatt Earp, Wynonna returns to her hometown (appropriately named Purgatory) to protect it from demons, as her great grandfather once did. But, of course, it’s not that straightforward.

Wynonna must take out Revenants, the resurrected souls of criminals that Wyatt dealt with in his time. If they are not properly dispensed with in Purgatory, they will escape into the world and wreak havoc. She does have some help, including from Doc Holliday who has been cursed with immortality. It’s a show with a lot of action and is fun to watch. Luckily, it’s already been given a second season.

It follows pretty closely to the comic book series it’s based on. In that, Wynonna is a special agent with the US Marshals Monster Squad and deals with all kinds of paranormal creatures, including redneck vampires, a mummy hitman and hillbilly gremlins. The action and killings are pretty graphic, but the book has some great art and writing either way. The original run for the IDW series ended in 2011, but a limited series came out in 2016 as a tie-in with the show.
