Best Geeky Finds – Love is for the Geeky (A.K.A. An Unintended Praise of Mary Kate Wiles’ Acting)

Blog-BGFIt’s that time again. Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day/Singles-Awareness Day/Ferris Wheel Day/Library Lover’s Day (my favorite of all of these). To commemorate these holidays, I found a few geeky love stories to binge on.

I Ship It (2014)
When Zoe’s (Mary Kate Wiles) boyfriend and bandmate Peter (Joey Richter) breaks up with her days before the big Wizard Rock battle of the bands, she decides she must fight back the depression. Meanwhile her friend Charlie was recently dumped. With their mutual depression and hatred of their exes, the duo writes a killer song for the contest while trying to understand their feelings for each other.

While this short is a couple years old, and came out after the fall of the Wizard Rock craze, it is still a great film for any Harry Potter fan who has dealt with weird relationships like this. Writer and Director Yulin Kuang did such an excellent job with this story that I find myself rewatching this film whenever I need an upbeat song like “Horcruxes.” Add to this awesome actors like Mary Kate Wiles, Sean Persaud, and Joey Richter – why not ship them?

The Lizzie Bennett Diaries (2012-2013)
I am a huge Jane Austen fan. Despite having been forced to read Pride and Prejudice in high school, I have enjoyed reading her work ever since. With the new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies coming out soon, I realize many people haven’t read either the original work or the parody piece the new movie is based on.

The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modern take on the tale of the Bennett sisters, Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. Lizzie is a struggling college student studying the use of film and video blogging in marketing and business. With the help of her best friend Charlotte, Lizzie starts a regular video blog for class with quickly evolves into a daily story about her family and her sister Jane’s love life.

For anybody who really wants to get into Jane Austen but doesn’t want to spend the time reading Pride and Prejudice (I hope there isn’t anybody out there like this), LBD is the place to be. The web series led into 4 spinoffs, including Lydia, Charlotte, and GiGi Darcy’s stories which happen throughout the main series, as well as an adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished story “Sanditon” featuring GiGi Darcy. The show stars Ashley Clements, Mary Kate Wiles, Laura Spencer (from The Big Bang Theory), Julia Cho, Daniel Vincent Gordh, and many more.

Dreamworld (2012)
Aspiring animator Oliver Hayes (Whit Hertford) has dreams of breaking into the film industry. After a failed interview with Nickelodeon he has an unexpected meeting with a stranger, Lily (Mary Kate Wiles) who seduces him with the promise of knowing somebody who works at Pixar and getting him a job. Thinking that this is his destiny, Oliver leaves with Lily and travels to California. Along the way Oliver falls for his traveling buddy. During their trip however he learns some dangerous secrets and lies about Lily which may derail his relationship, and possibly even his career.

This indie film, while not being strictly a love story, is a wonderful tale for struggling artists and those who have trouble with relationships early on.
