Comics Cosmos – Cave Dwellers & Cybernetic Eyes

The first thing to catch your attention about Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye is, obviously, the title. And yes, it’s a factual statement about the main character. But if you pick up the comic you’ll soon find out there’s a lot more to it than an enhanced human character.

Cave Carson is a spelunking adventurer who used to be part of a team of heroes and rubbed elbows with the likes of Superman. His adventures continued even after he got married and had a child – his daughter Chloe was even involved in some escapades. But ultimately, he and his wife, Eileen, wanted a quiet life and they retired from being heroes. Of course, there wouldn’t be much to read if things stayed that way.

It just so happens that Eileen is from a race of people living within the Earth and after her death (not a spoiler – Cave is a widow from the start of this series) there’s an attempted kidnapping of Chloe and Cave discovers something is amiss down below. So he teams up with Wild Dog to check things out and perhaps save the day. But, as can be expected, nothing goes quite as planned.

Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye vol. 1: Going Underground contains the beginning of this adventure and gives just enough to grab a reader’s attention. It’s a comic book version of a pulp adventure, with cave dwellers, evil geniuses, corrupt corporations, shape shifting demigods… a typical cast of over-the-top characters. The art is pretty cool and it makes up for a plot that’s pretty obvious, except for the fact that there’s never an explanation about that cybernetic eye.
