Comics Cosmos – A Couple of Guardians

One of the good things to come from comicbook properties getting the big screen treatment and becoming a little more mainstream is the associated merchandise. This includes new comic titles, as well as rereleases of classic stories exploring the origins of characters and their early adventures. This happened for multiple members of Guardians of the Galaxy, including Rocket Raccoon and Groot.

Rocket Raccoon & Groot: The Complete Collection includes stories from the 1960s and 70s where the two characters first appeared (individually) and some early adventures together, right through to something a little more recent with the Annihilators. Their adventures are full of sentient creatures of all types, insane humans (aka Loonies), killer clowns, evil lizards… it’s quite a ride. But throughout, it provides background to characters that so many have come to know through the MCU.

Though full of action, the earliest issue in this collection are also very word-heavy, which reflects the style at the time. There’s a lot of exposition that a reader of modern comics will likely find unnecessary. But overall the collection is a fun read and some of the art is fantastic, especially considering the characters involved.
