Comics Cosmos – Off to Dreamland

One of the most interesting new heroes to break onto the comics scene in recent years is a plus-sized uber geek with the power of flight, from Valiant Comics. Faith Herbert (codename Zephyr) first appeared in Harbinger in 1992 and ultimately scored her own series, considered by much of geek media to be one of the best comics of 2016. Now she’s back in the miniseries Faith: Dreamside

The series, which began at the end of September,  follows directly from recent events in Faith’s world, meaning that she’s in hiding as her alter ego, reporter Summer Smith. But when some trouble arises, she drops the façade to lend a hand… and ends up in even more trouble. But that’s just the beginning, as a friend needs help in the realm of nightmares and Faith has to figure out a way to be a hero in the subconscious world.

Jody Houser has written all of the Faith standalone series and she’s back for Dreamside. Because of that, the character and story have the same feel and all of the geeky references you would expect. (Seriously, this is a big reason to love Faith – she is unapologetically geeky, using catch phrases and theories from a lot of fandoms.) It would help to read earlier series to fully understand where the story begins and who Faith is, but it’s not a necessity to enjoying this miniseries.
