Playing Around – New Tech

CES is an annual technology convention where companies show off their latest, coolest gadgets. Taking place for more than 50 years, the 2019 edition is happening right now and some awesome products have already been revealed. Exhibitors cover everything from 3D printing and digital money to artificial intelligence, robotics and drones to self-driving technology and smart homes to wearables and wireless devices.

Not surprisingly, gaming laptops have a solid presence at CES. Alienware revealed its Area-51m, which allows swapping out the GPU and CPU at any time and has a desktop-quality processor. It also brought out an HDR-enabled 55-inch OLED gaming monitor with a 120Hz refresh rate. Razer brought out the Razer Blade Advanced, a more powerful version of the popular Razer Blade 15. And there’s the 2-in-1 Predator Triton 900 from Acer, which can be used as in laptop, easel, display or reverse mode.

Atari (through Calinfer and Unis Technology) put some home furnishings on display with a line of Pong tables – yes, the classic video game. A Pong coffee table was revealed at CES last year, but this year there are a couple of upgrades. The coin-operated Pong arcade table is intended to be played while standing, much like in an arcade. But the height of the square cocktail table is adjustable for both sitting and standing play. And there are practical features too – the tables have cup holders and a water-resistant seal on the display.

Finally, there’s the next level of VR gaming innovation from, not surprisingly, Tesla. Using electro-tactile haptic feedback, the Teslasuit mimics sensations from AR/VR settings like bumping into something, touching an object or the impact of a punch. Plus, you can program your own effects into it. It also has biometric features, climate control and full-motion capture capabilities.
