Irregular’s Intel – Award Shows and the Geek

You know it. You see it every year and it frustrates the crap out of you, just like me. The Golden Globes and the Oscars live to diss geek friendly movies. As good as Wonder Woman is, it did not get a nod at all. As Shakespearian as Thor was, it got totally ignored. To be honest with you, regardless of how phenomenal Black Panther is, I’m doubtful that it will get the recognition it deserves.

In so many ways, geek culture has arrived. In music and TV we’ve gotten so much geek representation, and not as comic relief. Shows like The Good Place and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. feature geeky characters and the shows tend to get recognized for their quality. But do they get awards outside of People’s Choice? Not really. As a matter of fact, the only “movie” award any geek movie can or will win is the MTV Movie award.

I’m pointing these out to show the harsh reality that geeks have not fully arrived. I feel that the committees view superhero, fantasy and science fiction movies as fluff. That’s not to say that many movies aren’t. But look at Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther and Wonder Woman. These are extremely well-made films and they take the superhero genre to the next level. Awards don’t validate this for me, but it would be nice to see these quality films get some recognition outside of technical awards. I may be wrong and the Oscars may surprise me. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
