She Geek Critique – The Big and Small of It

Another big Marvel movie hit theaters last weekend and, of course, I was there. Actually, I went to the Ant-Man double feature fan event – it just happened to fall on my birthday and I had the day off anyway. It had been awhile since I’d seen the first movie, so it was a nice refresher (especially, as with every Marvel movie, there are things you pick up once you’ve seen the films that come after it). And I have to say, Ant-Man and the Wasp doesn’t disappoint.

First off, it does have the same feel as Ant-Man – a little lighter in tone than other MCU films. This time, however, the plot is a little more serious as Scott is dealing with house arrest (after the part he played in Captain America: Civil War), Hank and Hope are on the run from authorities with their research, new villain Ghost is attempting to steal Pym technology and, of course, there’s the quest to save Janet from the Quantum Realm. Yes, there’s a lot going on, but it all fits together well.

The plot spans only a couple of days, so there’s no room for slow spots or unnecessary plot points. There’s some excellent storytelling going on here along with the almost non-stop action. Speaking of which, the fights involving Wasp and Ghost are phenomenal – fantastic effects and some truly great choreography result in great ass kicking. Sure, Ant-Man still does his thing, but Wasp is the real star of this sequel.

There aren’t really big spoilers for the plot itself, but I won’t give away how things are resolved. Needless to say, pretty much like the first movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp has a happy ending. But that’s why the mid-credits scene is a gut punch. I’m not spoiling it, but you’ll know exactly what I mean when you see it.
