She Geek Critique – The Thing About Fandoms

As geeks, we all have our fandoms. That’s sort of the point – you really can’t be a geek without one. Whether it’s in the realm of books, television, comics, games, movies, science, tech or a crossover hybrid sort of thing, every geek has at least one fandom and most have multiples (the best geeks have multiples – no one really likes a geek who won’t shut up about the single property they’re into!). But what happens when your tastes change or you outgrow a fandom?

First off, yes, it happens. Consider something you absolutely loved as a kid – a toy line or a cartoon franchise. The memory may spark some nostalgia now, but it may be that it’s just not your thing anymore. Or what about that tv show that got you through some formative college years? You hung on to it for a time, but you probably wouldn’t even watch an episode now because your life has moved beyond what it held for you.

Sure, there are things from childhood that we still might be fans of and we collect the merch, try to meet celebs from it or find news about it wherever we can. But you know what? You don’t need to. You CAN drop a fandom if it just doesn’t “do it” for you anymore. There’re plenty of other things you can focus on when you free yourself of something you just don’t need. Maybe you’ll even find something new to become a fan of.
