She Geek Critique – We All Win

We had a great interview this past weekend with a couple of burlesque performers (it will be on this week’s issue of GW1). We talked not only about the art and how the performers got into it, but also the growing popularity of the art in the geek community. If you’re not aware “nerdlesque” – essentially burlesque with a nerdy, geeky theme – is a thing and it’s fantastic!

While discussing the magic of outfits and creating them from scratch, an interesting point came up. Burlesque performers are benefiting from the increased popularity of cosplay. Materials they used to have to special order are now readily available at fabric and craft stores. When it comes to making outfits, it doesn’t matter if it’s a costume for a con or something that needs to tear away for a performance!

It made me think about, generally, how geeks have each other’s backs. And it’s not just the greater benefit to more groups because of cosplay becoming more mainstream. The evolution of nerdlesque is due in part to the open mindedness of geek communities and the desire to explore and enjoy fandoms in every way possible. You never know how supporting one aspect of something you enjoy will help other branches grow!
