Comics Cosmos – The Vision

ccWhether you’re a Marvel movie fan or you read the comics (or both!), you’ve heard of Vision. He’s actually had a few iterations over the years, beginning as an alien in 1940 through the android/synthoid most are familiar with from the MCU. He has a long history in comics and has primarily appeared with the Avengers or various members thereof, though he did have a couple four-issue series runs of his own (1994 and 2003).

In 2015, Marvel decided to give Vision a longer-running solo series called simply Vision. The premise is straightforward, in a Frankenstein sort of way: Vision wants to be as human as possible and so he builds himself a family – wife, Virginia, and teen children, Viv and Vin. They share the same powers, but also the desire to fit in.

visionOf course, it wouldn’t be much of a story if everything went as planned. The Visions move into a quiet suburban neighborhood, but the neighbors aren’t exactly happy about it. Viv and Vin attend the local highschool, but are unclear on the concept of learning when they have extraordinary abilities. Virginia is quick to react to problems she faces, but seldom in the right way. And things keep going from bad to worse as one mistake leads to another and the lies keep piling on.

This is not a happy superhero storyline. Vision is full of drama and darkness as the characters grasp at humanity. The things they do and the lines they cross – it’s shocking at times. The series is so well written and such an intense read that it’s hard to wait for the next issue. The final issue hits shelves in mid-October, with volume 2 of the trade out in November. This is definitely a series worth binging.
