The Gamer Geek Blog – Striking a Balance

GGBHey geeksters!

So after watching a lot of Food Network, I came to realize that games are a lot like food. As weird as that may sound, it’s kinda true. The easiest way to explain this is looking at a game like Kingdom Hearts not (Re:Chain of Memory).

Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG – two genres that in theory should not mix, but when done right come together in a way that can change how games are played. Action games normally have a boring story, but cover that with crazy, over the top things like grappling from roof to roof or a host of missions. RPG’s are kind of the opposite – they normally have a good story, but boring gameplay, like Pokemon and Fire Emblem which are turn based, and you just watch what happens. Now if you mash all this together you should get meh everything, but Kingdom Hearts isn’t – you get a “good” story and good gameplay.

Now with cooking, if you mix spicy and sweet you should get a hot mess, but you don’t sometimes (if done right). The key to both games and food is not exactly balance, but finding a healthy ratio of one or the other. With Kingdom Hearts, the gameplay is on point but the story is literally all over the place, so lets say that’s a 2:1 ratio. With food, namely sauce, you can get something that is spicy and has a hint of sweet so its not overbearing or vice versa.
