Irregular’s Intel – The Danger in Revisiting the Past

Blog-IIThe other night I was channel surfing and the first two episodes (originally a two hour tv movie) of Knight Rider were on and I had to watch. Back when the show first aired it was cutting edge and super cool. I was a religious watcher for most of the series. I loved the action, the adventure… and K.I.T.T. In fact, K.I.T.T. was my main reason for watching. But, this time I saw all of the flaws. From the cheesy dialogue to how K.I.T.T. is actually a bit of a dick.

I’m not saying that I wouldn’t enjoy the show now – I was a huge fan of the recent revival. What I am saying is what was perfect to me 30+ years ago is highly flawed now. But that is ok. Some shows travel well with me, Kung Fu, The Equalizer and Star Trek (TOS and TNG) to name a few. But others are so tied to the time they were produced in that to watch the show feels like a sad attempt to relive your glory days… if you’re the kind of person that your best days are behind you, which I am not!

At any rate, it is something that is true for movies, music, books… any form of entertainment. Will I continue to watch? Maybe. I have yet to reconcile the need to turn K.I.T.T. into a convertible and how in the world  a gang member figures out how to install Super Pursuit Mode in a piece of high tech machinery.
