Irregular’s Intel – Mixed Messages

The other night I was watching a repeat of The New Adventures of Wonder Woman and something happened on the show that just did not sit well with me. Diana was tasked with the mission of finding three crystals used in a telescope, but could be used to make a laser. The crystals were hidden in a box that ended up at a science fiction convention. The desk clerk was obviously frustrated by all of the costumed attendees and Diana looked as if she had been placed in the absolute worst situation imaginable.

I found it curious because this was a show that I’m certain had a sizable geek following at the time and this felt like a slap to the face. The sheer disdain for the geeks reminded me of another property that, in my opinion, uses geek culture as the butt of it’s jokes, Big Bang Theory. My wife came across a recent episode where during a scene Sheldon had to explain Gary Con and it was followed by a laugh track. Explaining a con that is dedicated to the memory of the creator of Dungeons and Dragons gets laughs… let that sink in.

There are plenty of other examples that I can pull from that give the mixed message of “I love you/you’re a weirdo” and I’m sure that you can find just as many. I simply don’t understand the reason for attacking the audience that made you! Then again, maybe I’m making too much of it?  At any rate, I’m too selective of what I watch to even bother with trying to figure that out.
