She Geek Critique – What’s So Funny?

I am not a big fan of comedy. Sure, I like a good laugh – I don’t just sit there stone-faced if there’s something funny to actually laugh about. But most of the time it takes a certain kind of humor to actually get me there. And what a lot of people find “knee slapping” hilarious isn’t it.

My sense of humor (as it is for most people) is born of my younger years. You probably know by now that I’m Canadian. Sure, we watched American sitcoms, but I also watched a lot of Britcoms (my dad, thankfully, was a fan of PBS). Plus, Canadian comedy is very close to British – a dryer, wittier humor. It’s the sort of thing that takes a bit of work to get right and when it lands it’s pretty damn hilarious.

Really what I don’t like is the mainstream comedy for the masses. Even now, I rarely watch any American sitcoms and I seldom go to see movies categorized as comedy. The “jokes” are obvious and dumbed down – it’s completely unsatisfying. Juvenile humor is pathetic and slapstick is, again, the easy way out and not funny at all. And no, I won’t laugh along with your studio audience and laugh tracks, thankyouverymuch.

Most of what I find humorous is not even something I’d laugh out loud over. It’s funny, I enjoy it, I move on. But in case you’re wondering, some of my favorite tv comedies are Parks and Recreation, Schitt’s Creek, Kim’s Convenience, Trailer Park Boys, Arrested Development and The Good Place. I recommend checking them out if your comedic tastes aim a bit higher.
