Irregular’s Intel – Science as a Casual Pursuit

IrregularIntelI was watching the news the other day and it was reported that scientists had discovered some molecules that did not behave as they should. Meaning that some of the things we know about atoms may not be entirely true, which opens the door to a whole world of possibilities. As I processed this information, I got excited! It meant possible advances in our scientific knowledge as a whole, and some possibly really cool discoveries along the way. I’m more of a science enthusiast and I feel no shame in saying that. I try to build a varied wealth of knowledge and to keep myself curious about the world around me.

There’s so much out there that I won’t pretend to understand, but it deepens my appreciation for the world that I live in. I am fortunate in that I am surrounded by others who are either actual scientists, sciency or casual enthusiasts, like me.
These varying degrees of understanding science urged me to deepen my knowledge and understanding. We live in an amazing time that has seen an increase in books, websites, social media pages and shows that explain science in layperson’s terms. Math and science are not in my wheelhouse, but science, physics specifically, holds a special interest for me. Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Cosmos series did an amazing job of laying out scientific principles in a way that the average person could easily understand. I find it exciting when knowledge is made available to the public in such a way. We cannot help but advance if this trend were to continue.

If you type “science for the lay person” into a search engine you would be pleasantly surprised by what you’d find. I’m not pushing everyone to pick a science and study it, although that certainly won’t hurt civilization. But, even if you’re just a little curious, venture outside your comfort zone, open you mind and lean something new about the world and maybe, yourself.
