Irregular’s Intel – Serenity Now!

Earlier this week I saw a video commemorating the 15 year anniversary of Firefly. This gave me pause because I didn’t realize that it had been that long since it hit the air and, after all of this time, I’m STILL salty about it being cancelled so soon.  It was, and is, the perfect example of a show that was ahead of its time.

It was an awesome mash up of genres and a study in communication skills to be able to give a fair and concise explanation of the show. On the surface, it was a space western. But you also got social commentary, horror, morality tale, comedy, drama, heist, gender politics and cultural studies. With the current climate, it feels like Firefly would do really well now. I find it the ideal show to kick back and relax with but, at the same time, it gets your head going too.

After the show ended we did get a gut wrenching feature film, Serenity. This movie just hit you where it hurt and kept hitting until you got about 38% of a happy ending. Lucky for us, Joss Whedon loves his comics. We got more Firefly stories there, plus several boardgames, a Fluxx game, an RPG and, now, a book series coming in the fall. I will gladly take that and I cannot wait!

So, in this age of reboots and remakes, can we expect to see a Firefly/Serenity remake? I honestly hope not. As sad as it is that the show was so short lived, to remake it would not be true to the property. Maybe another story from the ‘verse, sure, but leave those Big Damn Heroes where they belong.
