Miss Dawn’s Musings – Non-Hero Comics

Blog-MDMYou may have noticed that when I talk about comics, I have a tendency to talk about the superhero variety. I do have a penchant for them, especially the Marvel variety, but that’s not all I read. I’m also really into well-written antihero or paranormal stories. A couple of titles I’ve been reading in that vein are Sex Criminals and Outcast.

Sex Criminals is by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky. I like Fraction’s work and the premise was intriguing enough to give it a try. It’s about people who discover that time stops when they reach orgasm. So one gets the bright idea that it would be a perfect opportunity to rob banks. Of course, things don’t go as planned and the story gets more and more interesting. The characters are relatable and even if it’s a scifi storyline, it’s a real world setting.

Then there’s Outcast, which a lot of people have heard of by now because of the show that began this season on Cinemax. I’ll admit that I first picked this book up because I’d heard they were making a show. And the fact that it’s written by Robert Kirkman, who created The Walking Dead, is a defininte plus. If you’ve read some of my past posts, you know I’m into the paranormal so it’s not a stretch that I’d get hooked on Outcast. It’s all about people in a small town being possessed by “something” and a man who seems to be able to rid them of it when the exorcisms attempted by the town preacher no longer seem to be working. The show follows the comic pretty closely and both have a fantastic creepy feeling.

There are a few other non-superhero titles I read, including Rat Queens, which I’ll cover sometime soon. Hopefully if you’re a comic reader, you’ll give these a try. Let me know what you think!
