Playing Around – Animated Gotham

Pretty much everyone who is into the Bat Family will tell you that Batman: The Animated Series was perhaps the best iteration of the characters, live action or cartoon. It debuted more than 25 years ago and the love fans have for it doesn’t seem to have waned one bit. And later this summer, fans will be able to play out scenarios from the show in a new miniatures tabletop board game.

A shadowy organization is pulling the strings of all the criminal groups in Gotham. While the city has never truly been safe, lately, the criminal underworld’s unrest has put the city on the precipice of total destruction.

Batman: The Animated Series – Gotham Under Siege, from IDW Games, will let you play the role of Batman or an assortment of his friends in a fight to save Gotham from the usual nefarious forces. Game play involves balancing missions from story cards with keeping Gotham safe from crime. Players will need to stop the villains while making sure there’s still a city left when the villains are defeated.

The 48 story cards that come with the game are derived from the first season of Batman: The Animated Series and there’s a promise for expansions in the future. Miniatures for the game include Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Catwoman and a Commissioner Gordon/Renee Montoya. In addition, the game includes character cards, loads of tokens (for thugs, henchmen, ninjas and more), 32 dice and an assortment of boards and tiles, plus the rule book. At $50, Gotham Under Siege seems to be good fun for fans. Look for it in stores and online in early September.
