Playing Around – You Remind Me of the Babe

If you are a fan of 1980s fantasy films, you undoubtedly know Labyrinth. Jim Henson’s musical fantasy adventure starred David Bowie as the Goblin King and Jennifer Connelly as a girl trying to rescue her baby brother. It gained a cult following, had a sequel in comic book form and there has been talk over the past couple of years of doing a sequel/spin-off movie. And for those into gaming, there is also a tabletop version of the story.

This cooperative game can be played by up to four players (playing as Sarah, Ludo, Sir Didymus and Hoggle) and there’s an option to add a fifth player as Jareth, the Goblin King. Like the movie, the goal is to save the infant before the clock strikes 13. There are two stages to the game. In the first, players adventure through the labyrinth to find the goblin city. In the second, player’s fight their way into the Goblin King’s castle to rescue Sarah’s brother.

There are 13 turns to the game and it takes roughly one hour to play. And the game has good replay value, as play involves random cards being used on the board, which means the game progresses differently each time. Plus, the board is well-illustrated and there are detailed miniatures of each playable character. There is a Goblin Expansion available as well, which provides additional cards and miniatures.

Labyrinth The Board Game is priced at $50, average for a game that includes so many things (board, cards, miniatures, dice, etc.). So if you’re someone who wants to discover whether the Labyrinth really is a piece of cake, here’s your chance.
