She Geek Critique – Second Chances

I am not a fan of second chances. If I’m not happy with something, I leave it behind and don’t look back. The same happens with people – get on my bad side and you are out of my life. Yes, it’s a “burning bridges” sort of thing, but I am not about to waste my time on something I don’t enjoy or someone who harshes my mellow.

But, of course, there are exceptions to every rule, even for me, and recently giving someone a second chance has turned out really well. So it made me think of a few other things I’ve given a second chance and how that fared. The first that comes to mind (because we caught up on the end of the season this weekend) is Lethal Weapon. Honestly, I think the movies are just ok and when a tv show was announced I didn’t care. Then I caught a couple episodes when hubby was watching… and it’s a pretty decent show. Sure, it has plenty of over-the-top moments, but it flows much better than the movies, has more heart and is just enjoyable.

Another thing might surprise some people – cosplay. Many of you know that I like occasionally dressing as characters or making up my own steampunk versions. But I wasn’t always into it and, at times, was a bit disparaging. I’m not going into details as to the whats and whys, and I still have my ups and downs with it, but overall I have fun with it now. And I also love seeing what the more skilled cosplayers come up with, both ones that are known only locally and ones that have a big fan base.

Considering things can go well, why, you might ask, do I not like second chances? Because for every one that ends up good, there are a lot that end badly. I’ve been burned a few times on a personal level and that kind of affects a person’s viewpoint. And, as a geek, there are just so many possible things to be interested in, but only so much time to devote to them that it’s simply easier to walk away. I’m even at the point of leaving a book unfinished if I’m not enjoying it by about page 50. Priorities!
