Irregular’s Intel – Barbecue: A Religious Experience

Last week I headed down to West Tennessee to visit family and to take my wife to the Memphis In May International Barbecue Competition. It had been almost 20 years since I had been and it was high time that my wife got to experience the awesomeness as well. Now, the thing that you must understand when it comes to Memphis, TN and barbecue…it is religion. Barbecue is a food, not a way of cooking and you better be talking about charcoal because “gas” is a four letter word. And  to share barbecue with someone is an almost religious experience. To share barbecue that you made even more so.  Continue reading Irregular’s Intel – Barbecue: A Religious Experience

Irregular’s Intel – My Latest Adventure

November 2017 I was knocked on my ass. I was pretty certain that, although I was a big guy, I was still reasonably healthy… that would be wrong! Little did I know that I had a blood clot in my lung and, if I’d continued to live the way I had been living, I was not going to be around much longer. That’s a pretty sobering thought! I was surrounded by family, blood and chosen. To see the worry on all of those faces made me feel like shit. I was there, on my back, out of my head at one point because I had too much carbon dioxide in my blood… it was not good at all. Once I was released and back to a state of reasonable health, along with oxygen to sleep with and three prescriptions, I swore that, in 12 months, I would be free of those pills.  Continue reading Irregular’s Intel – My Latest Adventure

She Geek Critique – For the Sake of Nostalgia

It’s fair to say that geeks are born, not made. It’s just something that’s in us from the start – we gravitate to those things that put us in the category, whether it’s pop culture, sci-fi, fantasy, books, games, science, technology or whatever else is considered beyond mainstream. As such, a big piece of being a geek is indulging in nostalgia. And these days, there are plenty of ways to do that, from collectible figures to movie memorabilia to reboots of shows to movies based on favorite books. But there’s a distinction between true nostalgia and simple reminders.  Continue reading She Geek Critique – For the Sake of Nostalgia

Irregular’s Intel – Too Much Focus

Today we are pushed to focus on the job at hand, focus on your passions and to focus on whatever someone is telling you to focus on. Now focus can be a good thing – it breeds attention to detail and is integral to a job done well. But there is a flip side to this. And on the flip side come the times we miss what is around us that can bring joy that we will never know.  Continue reading Irregular’s Intel – Too Much Focus

Irregular’s Intel – The Underappreciated Break

The weekend is coming up and I am so looking forward to playing a lot of pinball and video games, reading, watching a movie or two, and not much else. Did you see that I didn’t mention anything productive in there? That’s not to say that reading is non-productive, but I plan on reading for pleasure. In short, I’m taking a much needed break. It is interesting how, as a culture, we do not embrace real leisure time. Americans feel this need to fill it all with activity (an idle mind is the devil’s workshop). We can’t have one silent moment and we must show something for the time we have been given. As I have gotten older, I have fully embraced a more European approach to my personal time. I do enjoy keeping active, but I need to balance it with some legit idle time.  Continue reading Irregular’s Intel – The Underappreciated Break
