Irregular’s Intel – Too Much Focus

Today we are pushed to focus on the job at hand, focus on your passions and to focus on whatever someone is telling you to focus on. Now focus can be a good thing – it breeds attention to detail and is integral to a job done well. But there is a flip side to this. And on the flip side come the times we miss what is around us that can bring joy that we will never know.  Continue reading Irregular’s Intel – Too Much Focus

Irregular’s Intel – The Underappreciated Break

The weekend is coming up and I am so looking forward to playing a lot of pinball and video games, reading, watching a movie or two, and not much else. Did you see that I didn’t mention anything productive in there? That’s not to say that reading is non-productive, but I plan on reading for pleasure. In short, I’m taking a much needed break. It is interesting how, as a culture, we do not embrace real leisure time. Americans feel this need to fill it all with activity (an idle mind is the devil’s workshop). We can’t have one silent moment and we must show something for the time we have been given. As I have gotten older, I have fully embraced a more European approach to my personal time. I do enjoy keeping active, but I need to balance it with some legit idle time.  Continue reading Irregular’s Intel – The Underappreciated Break

She Geek Critique – Everyone’s a Critic

Year ago, people used to be able to go to movies and just enjoy them. Sure, depending on the movie some would have been more enjoyable than others – I mean, the adventure of Raiders of the Lost Ark was perhaps a touch more “fun” than all the crying in Terms of Endearment (yes, that’s sarcasm). But somewhere along the way, with the evolution of the internet and the idea that everybody’s opinion needs to be made public, we stopped being satisfied with seeing a movie for the enjoyment factor and started critiquing everything about it.  Continue reading She Geek Critique – Everyone’s a Critic

Irregular’s Intel – A Few Thoughts On Dr. Hawking

I’m not the most scientific person, by any measure. I stink at math and the thought of trying to balance a chemistry formula still gives me the shakes! But I was, and am, a huge fan of Dr. Stephen Hawking. Outside of Mr. Wizard, he was the first to make science feel accessible for me. Maybe it is because the concept of a multiverse is something that I’d toyed with for a long time due to my love of science fiction and comics. It was cool knowing that a world respected scientist had formed a theory around that concept. Plus, he was so self-deprecating, how could you not like the man?  Continue reading Irregular’s Intel – A Few Thoughts On Dr. Hawking

She Geek Critique – Why Be Geek

As mainstream as it may seem at the moment, being a geek is still considered outside the norm. Some of us are lucky enough to be surrounded by fellow geeks and, thus, somewhat insulated from it. But people still question how someone could be such a big fan of certain shows or characters or even entire genres. They don’t understand the appeal of surrounding yourself with your pop culture fandoms (though they blindly accept sports fandoms!).  Continue reading She Geek Critique – Why Be Geek
