Irregular’s Intel – The G.I. Joe Movie We Deserve

Blog-IIIn 2009 we got something on the big screen that fans had been waiting on for a long time, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Now, as a fan, I was excited to see that we were finally getting a live action G.I. Joe movie. But I had heard of some of the changes that were being made in the interest of wider appeal, and I was ok with that, I got it. But there were other changes that were made and additions and whatnot… and what we ended up with was not G.I. Joe.

But roughly about the same time, a miniseries had been released and then eventually packaged as a movie and it was phenomenal! I am talking about Warren Ellis’ G.I. Joe: Resolute! This animated feature wasn’t about the red and blue lasers. As a matter of fact, it was much closer to its comic origins and, to a certain degree, darker than the feature film was.

Going back and looking at it, I forgot that it was a 60 minute feature because it has so much packed into it. The characters, although familiar, were fresh. And Warren Ellis embraced the real world danger that an organization like Cobra could be. You will forget that it is an animated movie that you’re watching and, if you’re lucky, forget that the first G.I. Joe movie even existed… #IJS!!
