She Geek Critique – Expressing Your Geek

It should come as no surprise that I hang around with geeks. Yes, that’s how the majority of my friends would be classified, to varying degrees (though not my family – definitely not my family). But because of taking part in various events throughout the year, primarily attending cons or Oddmalls, I’m exposed to an even larger community of geeks. And it can be interesting to see just how some of them choose to express their loves.

Now, because of the prevalence of merch these days, there are some easy and obvious ways to show your fandoms, t-shirts being the most prevalent. You can always pick out the norms who were dragged to a con because they are not in costume, nor are they wearing a shirt with a popular character or catchphrase on it! And, of course, there are plenty of other wearables and accessories that are easy to come by – any piece of clothing (from shoes to coats to underwear), jewelry, handbags and wallets and more.

But some of the best expressions of geek are costumes. If you’re on the edge of geekdom, you may think that means buying something from Hot Topic or a Halloween store and throwing it one. But no. True geeks make an effort – costumes are pieced together and handmade in order to look as close to a character as possible. And some are representative of entire properties or manifestations of non-living characters. Then there are those that are completely original and have a story to go along with them. What I find most satisfying is geeks who don’t care about costume contests, but dress the part because they love it that much.

Whichever way you choose to express your geek, just do it!
