She Geek Critique – Getting It Right

As I have mentioned before, movie casting is sometimes a big deal to me. This is especially in regard to geek properties, most especially comic book movies where the characters need to have a rather specific look. Regardless of abilities, I think it’s important to capture that look to truly capture the character. But even when the casting is not quite right, there can be moments in a movie when the acting, story and visuals come together so well that they get the character right.

This past weekend, along with millions of other people, I went to see Wonder Woman. Now I have not hidden the fact that, since she was first announced to appear in Bat Soup (that would be Batman v Superman, for those who might have a modicum of respect for the movie), I have not liked the casting of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. She may have the facial features and hair, but she lacks the bearing of an Amazon and a hero – there’s a strength and dignity missing. This did not, however, deter me from seeing Wonder Woman, as I’ve been a fan of the Amazon princess since I was a kid and I wanted to see how they’d finally tell her story on the big screen.

It’s a good movie. Sure it has its flaws, but it’s entertaining and tells a good story. Overall though, I was not convinced by Gadot in the main role (also, Chris Pine is no Steve Trevor). The reasons I didn’t like her casting to begin with held true throughout the movie. However, there were a few scenes when I did feel that I was finally seeing the Wonder Woman I knew on the screen. Not surprisingly, it was the action and fighting sequences. The combination of the choreography, effects and cinematography gave me the hero that the little girl in me needed to see and it gave me chills.

So yes, I am still concerned with casting, but it doesn’t deter me from seeing a movie and admitting that it’s good when it is. I think people too often let one or two things get in the way of enjoying a property, when it’s often worth giving it a shot (except for Bat Soup and Suicide Squad – if you haven’t seen those yet, DON’T!).
