Miss Dawn’s Musings – Casting Counts

Blog-MissDawnsMusingsSome people will see a movie based on the franchise, others based on the reviews, but many will go because a particular actor is involved. Now in straight up dramas and even comedies, the actor can make all the difference. You can be pretty sure, for example, that De Niro or Streep are going to give good movie or that Stiller or Ferrell will bring some laughs (though comedy being much more subjective, they’re a little hit or miss). But does the actor matter much when it comes to comic book / superhero / geek movies, especially in the initial casting? Continue reading Miss Dawn’s Musings – Casting Counts

Best Geeky Finds – They See Me Rolling: A Review of the Movie Rubber

bestgeekyfindsIt’s a story as old as time. Tire becomes sentient, learns it has super powers, goes on a killing spree, and then falls in love with a human woman whom he just can’t talk to.

First of all, I can only recommend this movie to film students and those interested in the different aspects and qualities of script writing or film history. This is not a Saturday afternoon popcorn movie, despite being, on the surface, a movie about a murderous car tire.

V-Yellow’s Comic Box – Female Superheros

VernComicI wonder how many female character leads we’ll see in DC and Marvel films. I know that Warner Bothers will begin filming the first live action Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot this month. While Marvel studios are working on a Captain Marvel movie in 2018. I will include the upcoming Supergirl series on CBS staring Melissa Benoist and Jessica Jones series on Netflix starring Krysten Ritter, but that’s all we’ve seen or heard from as far as a standalone superhero movie in recent years. Yes, Scarlett Johanson has been a big part of Marvel’s cinematic universe but she hasn’t been in her own movie. Continue reading V-Yellow’s Comic Box – Female Superheros

Best Geeky Finds – Tammy and the T-Rex

bestgeekyfindsI have never been a fan of gore. Horror movies that rely of blood and guts disgust me to the point of hating an entire movie even if the plot is good simply because of an absurd amount of gore. For this reason, I often find older and really bad horror and science fiction films that, while the story may be awful, it’s clean enough that I spend the entire time laughing.

The idea of this review began when Kylan posted a facebook survey about how many “bad” movies he had seen (I’ve only seen 36 of 170, but I plan to remedy this). I responded by asking how many of those he had seen he enjoyed.

I realize there are many really bad movies out there that should never have seen the light of day, even if they never reached a movie theater, but there are also many that, while considered “bad,” are enjoyable on different levels.

So this week I review a gem from the depth of the ‘90s: Tammy and the T-Rex. First, check out the trailer. Continue reading Best Geeky Finds – Tammy and the T-Rex
