Best Geeky Finds – Yoga Hosers (2016, PG-13)

“I’m not even supposed to be here today!”

The number of times I’ve thought this is greater than I even want to consider. Kevin Smith’s original series of movies, starting with Clerks, while sometimes cruder than I wished a movie to be depending on the age I was the first time I watched, continue to get better long after their release dates. This is also seen in Smith’s various television projects, including his stints in the Arrowverse. So when a new Smith movie featuring a convenience store showed up on Netflix, there was no way I could ignore it… especially when it involves Canadian Nazis.  Continue reading

Miss Dawn’s Musings – Best of 2016

There was a lot of bad in 2016 – celebrity deaths, politics, natural disasters, terrorist acts. But as the year finally comes to an end I want to reflect on some of the good, at least in my opinion. In the realm of geek there was a lot that made us all happy this year and helped us to, if not forget, at least distract ourselves for a little bit from all the bad.  Continue reading

Best Geeky Finds – Merry Christmas Mars!

In honor of Christmas Eve, I picked up a holiday classic often found on every “worst movie of all times” list. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964) tells the harrowing tale of children Billy and Betty, siblings who are kidnapped by Martians. The Martian ship has come to Earth because they are seeking Santa Claus.  Continue reading

Irregular’s Intel – The Geek Holiday Survival Guide

Some of us are going to be spending time with groups of people who are outside of our norm. They just don’t get us. Why are we so weird? What is that book? What is an RPG? As geeks, we can isolate ourselves from the “norms” and get lost in our world because we surround ourselves with others like us. But once the holidays come around, we get that stark reminder – but that is OK! I am here to give you the survival guide to get you through!  Continue reading

Miss Dawn’s Musings – Last Minute Rush

So you promised yourself this year you’d get everything done early so the holidays wouldn’t be such a stressful rush, as they always seem to be. You got the decorations up in good time, mailed out cards, made lists of what presents to get… but you never quite got around to going to the mall… or other stores… or Amazon. And now there’s less than a week until Christmas and you haven’t finished your shopping! Well if you’ve got geeks on your list, I’m here to help.  Continue reading

Best Geeky Finds – A Christmas Horror Story

Since Love Actually hit the movie screens, only to be showing repeatedly on cable television every holiday season for no perceptible reason, the concept of interconnected stories that have little to do with each other has been related to Christmas. Even television shows like Glee have explained away the concept as a “Love Actually episode.” So when you have a movie called A Christmas Horror Story, it’s not surprising that the movie is set up with unrelated interconnected stories.  Continue reading

Irregular’s Intel – Strong Female Characters: On Their Own Terms

I often shy away from writing about strong female characters because I worry that I’ll come off as sounding like “that guy”. Strong females have always been around and I know that they are not new. But we are now in a time where female leads aren’t really a novelty anymore and I love it. Continue reading

Comics Cosmos – ‘Tis the Season

It seems appropriate to provide a bit of a gift guide for those who have comicbook fans in their lives, but no idea what to get them. After all, not every geek is into comics (shocker!), so it can be a bit overwhelming and confusing to try and sort through what to get those who love them. Of course, individual fandoms vary, but here are some ideas to hopefully help you out.  Continue reading

Miss Dawn’s Musings – Artsy, Crafty Geeks

Perusing another Oddmall (the odd/geeky arts & crafts show), it makes you think about what constitutes “geek” when it comes to handmade merchandise. Is it just using characters or insignia from various fandoms? Is it the style or overall look of a piece? Is it the representation of more intellectual pursuits?  Continue reading

Best Geeky Finds – How About Some Ice Cream?

Have you ever wanted to see a film where Santa gets stuck on the beach and thoroughly hates it? What about a Christmas movie that has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas? If you take all this, throw in a terrifying Easter bunny, a defunct amusement park, and a plethora of random animals, and you have Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny. In 1972, the movie was filmed at Pirate’s World, a Florida amusement park that was built to compete with Walt Disney World. The theme park ultimately could not compete with the mouse, and was shut down a year later. Personally, I believe it was this movie that did it in.  Continue reading
