The most recent comic book I picked up was the DC comic and IDW published Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover. This is the first issue titled “Knights in a Half-shell”. This is a six issue series and it comes out monthly. I was curious on how other people would like the book but so far everybody seems to give it positive reviews. Who wouldn’t love to read The Dark Knight and four teenage mutant ninja turtles fight crime together? This is like a childhood dream come true. I get to read two of the best 90’s hero’s I grow up on in one book.

In this first issue the Turtles are not in their hometown of New York, but instead they are in Gotham City hunting down the Foot Clan. Meanwhile, Batman is busy trying to figure out why ninjas are in his city. He knows this could not be the works of Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins. He knows that they would be there to confront him but they did not show up to his cave and, second, they wouldn’t have been as noticeable. He also got word of mouth that these ninjas were mutated. While Alfred and Bruce discuss who the new ninjas in town are, back in the sewers Killer Croc and his gang are planning a new job. They discover the Turtles’ new hideout and plan on killing them whenever they get back; that did not work out so well for Croc. Later on in the book, Batman and Shredder have their first encounter while in the sewers the Turtles and Master Splinter had to look for a new place. As they are leaving the sewers they discover the Batmobile and just as they are getting ready to inspect the car they see Batman looking down on them from a rooftop.

I really enjoyed this issue. It was very well drawn – Freddie E. Williams had the perfect description of the Turtles, but it was a little odd and interesting to see Batman and Gotham City this way. Art for this book was amazing for the Turtles but a little off for Batman’s world. Still the art looked amazing, but it was strange to see Batman put into the Turtles world. I wonder how that would look if the Turtles were drawn in Batman’s universe. I can’t wait for next month’s issue to drop so I can continue reading this story.
