Irregular’s Intel – Why Die Hard is the Greatest Christmas Movie, Ever!

IrregularIntelOn this day many of us have watched all or part of one or many Christmas movies. These all have in common the presence of Santa Claus, the baby Jesus, the Christmas Spirit, gifts, trees, vacations, family, shopping and all of the other tropes in varying degrees. But, geeksters, there is one that rises above the fray. This tale does not involve shopping, Santa, lost Christmas Spirit, the baby Jesus, or any of the other stuff I have mentioned. This movie involves one man searching for redemption in the eyes of his wife and one man seeking forgiveness in himself and both will find what they are seeking at Nakatomi Plaza. Irregular’s Intel – Star Wars and the Hero’s Journey

IrregularIntel I’m fresh from seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens and I am buzzed and full of feels. But this isn’t a review of the movie. This is about a common theme through all of the Star Wars saga: the hero’s journey. We see it in Anakin’s story and Obi Wan’s, too. But no, here we are again, looking at yet another release of action figures that leaves out a female hero. Continue reading Miss Dawn’s Musings – Back to the Toy Section

Miss Dawn’s Musings – Casting Counts

Blog-MissDawnsMusingsSome people will see a movie based on the franchise, others based on the reviews, but many will go because a particular actor is involved. Now in straight up dramas and even comedies, the actor can make all the difference. You can be pretty sure, for example, that De Niro or Streep are going to give good movie or that Stiller or Ferrell will bring some laughs (though comedy being much more subjective, they’re a little hit or miss). But does the actor matter much when it comes to comic book / superhero / geek movies, especially in the initial casting? Continue reading Miss Dawn’s Musings – Casting Counts

Best Geeky Finds – They See Me Rolling: A Review of the Movie Rubber

bestgeekyfindsIt’s a story as old as time. Tire becomes sentient, learns it has super powers, goes on a killing spree, and then falls in love with a human woman whom he just can’t talk to.

First of all, I can only recommend this movie to film students and those interested in the different aspects and qualities of script writing or film history. This is not a Saturday afternoon popcorn movie, despite being, on the surface, a movie about a murderous car tire.
